I, as one of the Japanese, would like to express our sincere appreciation for the US contribution to rescue and relief efforts on the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami on 3.11.
In Japan, it has been reported that, under the name of Operation Tomodachi, more than 18,000 of US military forces are being dispatched to the damaged areas and that they have been playing a fundamental and significant role in the operation in cooperation with Japan's Self Defense Force.
I believe that the Japanese will remember this and reassure the importance of US-Japan Alliance, and also hope to overcome the recent political uncertainty (e.g. Futenma US Airbase) with the spirit of the US-Japan "Tomodachi" friendship.

知行一致（陽明学）/Consistency of vision and action
理想やビジョンを実現するための「実行力」は、武士道の根本思想だと思う。
幕末の志士達が愛読したと言われる「自助論」には「天は自ら助くる者を助く」とあるし、山本五十六の名言「やってみせ、言って聞かせて、させてみて、褒めてやらねば、人は動かじ」も、自らが実行することを基本哲学としている。高杉晋作の「おもしろきこともなき世をおもしろく」もそうだ。
一方で、世には、大衆に耳障りのよい空理空論を繰り広げる評論家が、TVの中だけでなく、実行組織の中にも巣食っている。劣化し切った一部の政治家に至っては言わずもがなで、実行の伴わない非現実的な発言ばかりだ。

ああすればいい、こうしろと安易に批評するだけではなく、自らが実際に行動し、より良い世の中を実現していく力を備えた人は意外と少ない。
また、実行に当たっては、十分な状況分析の基に行われなければ、行動そのものが的外れで無駄になりかねないところが、また難しい。
知識（知）と実行力（行）の両方を兼ね備えることは、希有な人物、または、優秀なチームによってのみ実現されるということか。
日本復活のためには、あらゆる分野で、変革への実行力が求められている。さもなくば、日本丸は沈没してしまう。この救国を実行するのは、次代を担う、我らが若手世代だと信じる。
Fundamental principles of Bushido are to possess vision/ideal as well as to take necessary actions consistent with the vision/ideal. We, in Japan, learn this from many proverbs/words of wisdom.
On the other hands, we see lots of critics, TV shows and politicians, who are generally called populists and/or idealists because they say something ideal but do not take necessary actions.
Today people in Japan already recognize that we need to change ourselves to survive under this global situation, but, so far, no drastic steps have been taken actually.
I insist young people, who will play an important role in building Japan's prosperous future, including myself, must stand up, possess vision/ideal and take concrete steps; otherwise, our future would be dark (In worst case, it would be swallowed by foreign countries)

一身の独立なくして一国の独立なし（福沢諭吉）/No Indepence of Nation without Independece of Individuals
独立自尊の精神の維持は、世の中の複雑性が増す中で、難しく重い言葉だと感じる。
自由と民主主義を享受する日本ではあるが、軍事上の米国への依存、食料や資源の他国への依存、既得権益を固守する役人、親に依存する子供（フリーター／ニート／引きこもり）、自分の部屋の掃除に金を払う者、拝金主義者と、様々な「依存」がある。
個人が、家族が、各コミュニティが、そして国が、他に依存することなく尊厳を持って生きて行くことが、究極の幸せであり、それは歴史上の偉人達が命をかけて守ってきたものだった。
勿論、鎖国しろとか、個人主義に走れと主張している訳ではない。助け合いや国際連携は、より良い生活に不可欠である。
国際社会の中で、特に激動のアジアの中で、日本人が（他国に支配されることなく）矜持を持って生きて行くためには、国の独立が不可欠。これが、日本の伝統と文化を継承していくことにつながると信じる。

In the today's complex world, it is important but difficult for us to keep the spirit of independence and dignity.
Though Japan is one of the nations under freedom and democracy, it is still "depending" on US military force, food supply from foreign countries, economic support from parents, money (mammonism), etc.
The ultimate happiness is that indivisuals, families, communities and the nation maintain their own independence from others with dignity. And this is what ancestors have protected with their own lives in danger. I do not mean Japan should close the nation again like Edo period nor we should go for indivisualism, since there is no question that joining international community is inevitable for better and safer lives.
In order to survive with dignity in international community, esp. in emerging Asian society, we must rediscover that the nation must be independent and this leads to keep and evolve our own tradition and culture.
